Many clients come  to me after already having registered their domain name yet we decide to host their website with a hosting service that does not carry the domain registration. Technically there is no reason to move the domain registration to the hosting site. Its  a simple process to repoint the domain name  servers to the hosting site and all is well.

Recently I had an experience that adds to a list of business reasons to hold your registration with the same business that hosts. I site I have been working with is adding a store which requires an SSL certificate.  As it happens the client has a business hosting account which gives them a free cerificate. But since the domain is registered elsewhere the hosting service requires proof of ownership. Reasonable says I. The registrar, yes the one that has the ads with the hooter girl look alikes, uses yet another 3rd party to maintain domain privacy which in turn wants to charge $15 to release ownership proof to a 3rd party, in this case the hosting company. Still with me? The privacy company is already charging a monthly fee and they want more money for ownership proof. $15 isn't going to break the bank but I am a cheap so and so and I hate being nickel and dimed. Don't you?

Further reasons to combine registrar and hosting accounts:

  1. The transaction described above instead of being an almost one click online transaction turns into a multiday  headache.
  2. Hosting services will often throw in freebies with your hosting account such as a free domain registrations, free SSL or SSH and so  on and so on. Read the fine print.

I'll vent on why not to use the hooter girl hosting service in another post. Try to avoid them if you can.
